About the HMS Band

The Huntsville Middle Band has received consistent Superior ratings at District Contest since 2001 when Mr. Adams came to HMS. The band has participated in concert contests in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Students from HMS go to the Huntsville High Band.

Students at Huntsville Middle play in several bands. Sixth graders play in beginning band and do two concerts per year; December and May. Seventh and Eighth graders play in the Advanced Band and perform in the December and May concerts, football games in August, September and October, and competitions in February and March. The Advanced band also travels to perform in competitions in the spring. All students may perform in Solo and Ensemble during April and May. Advanced Band students may opt to perform with the HMS Jazz Band which rehearses Thursdays after school and performs on the December and May Concerts.

Since 1960 previous directors have been George Page, Jack Ivy, Bill Lloyd, Sherman Barnes (25 years). The Merts Center was Huntsville Junior High for many years. Marching band practice was on "the hill" which is now the parking lot for Merts Center. The school auditorium is now used for school board meetings. In 1972 Huntsville Junior High became Huntsville Middle and in 1979 the current building was completed.
